Watershed Management and Planning

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge Watershed Planning
Morris
County, NJ

F. X. Browne, Inc. has been the watershed management consultant for the Ten Township Great Swamp Watershed Management Committee since 1996. We have organized and implemented a baseline and stormwater sampling program using automated samplers, conducted first Rush pollutant loading sampling, developed seminars for local officials, trained volunteers to assist with water quality monitoring, and have assisted in obtaining 319 grants for additional projects. As part of two separate 319 Non-point Source Program Grants, F. X. Browne, Inc. designed a sand filter to treat runoff from a municipal parking lot, designed a retrofit for an existing detention basin, and designed a bioretention system to treat runoff from a parking lot.  We also developed progressive stormwater management ordinances, which have been adopted throughout the watershed.

Additionally, using Dodge Grant funding, F. X. Browne, Inc. has conducted a detailed watershed inventory of the Loantaka and Great Brook Subwatersheds. All stream channels were evaluated to identify streambank erosion problems and developed areas in the watershed were evaluated to identify areas where untreated stormwater runoff is directed to storm sewers or streams. All problem areas in the subwatershed were ranked, prioritized, and mapped. Best Management Practices were identified for each problem area.  We have also conducted a stormwater basin retrofit inventory for the watershed, and conducted a water quality study of eleven lakes and pond within the watershed.
