Low Impact Development and Stormwater Management
F. X. Browne, Inc. designed an innovative low impact site design for the Canaan Valley Institute, including grading, utilities, stormwater management, wastewater treatment system design, and permitting. Our design for the CVI headquarters site was developed to minimize site impacts and maximize water quality benefits, environmental education opportunities, and overall site aesthetics. We worked closely with landscape architects to optimize aesthetics and coordinate the site layout.
F. X. Browne, Inc. designed a number of best management practices (BMPs) for both stormwater and wastewater management at the site. The stormwater treatment chain included bioretention areas, biofiltration swales, rain gardens, pervious pavement, green roofs, and constructed wetlands. We also designed a rainwater harvesting system of cisterns to collect rooftop runoff for reuse at the site. The wastewater treatment chain included a Living Machine system, composting toilets, a wastewater wetland, spray irrigation system, and a greywater recycling system.
Lastly, we assisted CVI in obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for such credits as Erosion and Sedimentation Control, Reduced Site Disturbance, Stormwater Management, and Innovative Wastewater Technologies.
