Constructed Wetland Treatment System Design
F. X. Browne, Inc. secured state and federal funding to design one of the first pocket wetlands in New Jersey, as a demonstration project. A scaled-down version of a wetland system, this is an innovative project because of its ability to improve water quality despite very limited available space in an urban environment.
Christ the King Church, as part of the expansion its facilities for a new activity center, was required to meet township requirements by upgrading its stormwater management facilities to provide water quality treatment. F. X. Browne, Inc. designed a pocket wetland, to grade the land and carve out a naturalized detention basin. The wetland helped the church meet multiple objectives: meet township permitting requirements, provide ecological benefits and improved water quality, and enhance site aesthetics. F. X. Browne, Inc. worked closely with the church to select plants that are consistent with its existing landscape and that are colorful throughout the year. As of August 2004, the site is fully designed and permitted, and the pocket wetland is being constructed.
